Every time I buy home decor items, be it online or at a store, sure I’m thinking of how they will look in a specific corner of my room but I’m also secretly thinking of the compliments they will fetch me. For example, I want my friends to know I know my art when they ask me about the console emblazoned with a Henri Matisse painting and I launch into a monologue about how the Fauvist movement was one of the first modern art efforts of the 20th century. I want them to sit on my lounger and let out an audible moan when they sink into its velvety depths. I want them to be drinking hot chocolate from a glass and gasp when the beverage recedes to reveal a jewel-toned glass flavour blooming inside. I want to be less host, more part-time art curator. If that’s how you feel too, feel free to borrow—and add to—my list of home decor items that look like they belong in a museum.
